“Peter Leyden and his team at Coastal Builders, as well as the subcontractors under his management, completed a major renovation of our Balnarring property in 2024/25. The works included: completely remodelling our kitchen/living area and separate dining room into a bright north-facing open plan kitchen/meals/living space; adding French doors and a bi-fold window; replacing all the windows; building a deck and replacing the verandahs; creating a walk-in-robe in the main bedroom; renovating the ensuite; creating an outdoor storage space; laying engineered timber floors and recarpeting the bedrooms; constructing new bedroom robes; significant plasterwork; and repainting fully inside and out.
Peter has been a pleasure to work with from the first day of contact. He came fully prepared to our initial meeting with notes and copies of the plans which he annotated as we walked through and around the property. He asked lots of questions and shared his ideas as to how some of the challenges could be overcome. He provided timely quoting with detailed line items and adjusted the quote as our budget required. At no time did we feel rushed into making a decision. We had looked at various builders, but felt Peter’s attention to detail, excellent communication and positive feedback from other clients and contractors was impressive and gave us peace of mind.
As we continued to live in part of the house while the rest was being renovated, having good relations with all the contractors was extremely important. Peter ensured that this process ran as smoothly as possible and advised when various works would take place which allowed us to plan ahead. Peter’s team at Coastal were always approachable and considerate and Peter successfully juggled the timing of all subcontracting work to minimise the inconvenience to us and get the job done as quickly as possible.
Peter and his crew are dedicated to providing quality work and excellent customer service. We are delighted with the high standard of finish throughout all aspects of the renovation. On the few occasions when minor works had to be rectified, Peter always followed up very quickly to ensure we were fully satisfied. His flexibility was evident when he managed to split the flooring, plaster and paint work so that we could return to living in the front of the house after it was renovated so that the back area could be completed. Peter was able to problem-solve on-the-spot or come back with creative solutions after researching any issue associated with the works. He was upfront about all costs and we were always made aware in advance if any part of the works might go beyond the contract terms and the agreed budget. He worked in seamlessly with other contractors we used for a servery counter and soft furnishings. We were impressed with the standard of clean-up after the works were completed. Peter also made recommendations for other service providers/trades that we might use for other projects.

“Having our house built was a really enjoyable and interesting time. We were living next door to the building site so experienced every step first hand. We were, very quickly, impressed with Peter’s thorough preparation; he knew the plans, he liased positively and thoughtfully with the architects, materials were ordered well in advance and arrived on time, sub-contractors were well briefed and overseen with a friendly attentiveness, and there was, consequently, a very positive, relaxed, industrious atmosphere on the site. And we really didn’t have a moment’s worry. I guess what we most appreciated then, and still do everyday, is the workmanship which went into the house. “Peter did a small amount of work for me previously and I was impressed with the quality, timing and reliability of Peter and his team. This time we had a big project renovating (transforming) an old house to a contemporary style. We knew most of what we wanted to achieve, but the many discussions with Peter helped us clarify a lot of things and stretched our thinking to ultimately end up with great results. We added in a large amount of additional work after we started the project, but this was not an issue with Peter and the team. He took it all in his stride and always worked from the perspective of making sure we were happy with the result. We gave him a fairly tight timeframe to work to and he mapped out the work perfectly to deliver on time (including much of the additional work). Peter’s co-ordination of the large number of trades involved was outstanding. There was no down time and the efficiency with which they operated was quite amazing to us. The site was always left in good condition at days end and rubbish was cleared regularly throughout the project. The finishing off was terrific and the very small number of outstanding things was tidied up quickly. The overall result was the best quality work we have experienced and we had no surprises throughout. We would say that we very much enjoyed working with Peter and his team as they were all really nice, genuine people who wanted to do a great piece of work for us!
